“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse (purify) us from ALL unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
This is so simple but we have had a lot of help misunderstanding it. If God purifies you from ALL unrighteousness then you are clean, God doesn’t make mistakes, He’s GOD! The only way to be purified from ALL unrighteousness is to be born again, “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin.” 1 John 3:9
If 1 John 1:9 was written to believers, then why did John talk as if they had no idea who Jesus is?
Look at verse 3,
“That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
1. John is declaring something they have no knowledge of. If these were believers John was speaking to, then he wouldn’t have said, “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you.” They would have already known it.
2. Also if the listeners were believers, then John wouldn’t have said, “That ye also may have fellowship with us.” If they were believers then there would’ve already been a fellowship with the hearers of John and with the, “Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
If you trust in confession as a believer, then you don’t know your stance as a Christian. Either you trust in your words (OT), or Jesus’ finished work (NT). You can’t be hot or cold, either you are all Jesus or all yourself.
